ABOUT THE LECTURE

In her World Building artist talk, Title Zero (a Deaf English loanword for “no title”), artist Christine Sun Kim will share multiple projects that visualize and contextualize how sound operates in her life and in the lives of her both Deaf and hearing collaborators.

In one project she creates drawings of musical notations, a written expression of sound, to communicate her Deaf experience and ideas. Critiquing the way TV and movie captions affect how the artist receives information, Kim and four Deaf friends create literal, conceptual, and poetic sound captions for a series of film clips related to voice. Using the communication tools of data visualization, Kim creates a series of pie chart drawings articulating all of the personal decisions she has made as a Deaf person. And in a collection of angle drawings (think acute and obtuse) the artist depicts levels of Deaf rage conjured by the inequitable, burdensome, and insulting experiences of discrimination and inaccessibility.

In a number of projects, Kim breaks down American Sign Language (ASL) to its essence, which in turn reveals its nuances and complexities. One video articulates the intimate and situational nature of non-manual signs (ASL signs without the use of hands but with facial expressions, head and shoulder movements, and mouthing). Another series of gestural drawings illustrate the conceptual vastness of the ASL sign for “future.”

With compelling humor and insight, radiating from the personal to a communal and justice-oriented perspective, Kim’s work expresses the depth and dynamism of sound and language in the human experience.
